Carols & Hymns Packet
Mass on Lo How a Rose (Keswani)
If you already have a copy of this from years past, please write in the phrasing and dynamic markings from the version above, and be aware that we will sing the Agnus Dei a whole step lower (in Eb Major, rather than F Major).
Alma Redemptoris Mater (Palestrina)
O Magnum Mysterium (Victoria)
CAROLS & HYMNS
These recordings are just to give an idea of the tune for each carol. Use the texts, rhythmic values, etc., given in the sheet music, regardless of what you hear in these recordings.
MASS ON LO HOW A ROSE
Go ahead and ignore distinctions between “solo” and “tutti.”
Kyrie & Gloria
In the word “Kyrie,” please do not put the “r” on prematurely; please sing kee-ree-eh rather than kear-ee-eh. If the word “eleison” is hyphenated as “e-le-i-son,” then sing each syllable as normal. If it is hyphenated as “e-lei-son,” then omit the “i” vowel.
In the Gloria, be careful to keep “e” vowels at the ends of words as pure, open “e” vowels, rather than making them into dipthongs; for example, let “Christe” be kree-steh rather than kree-stay; let “te” be teh rather than tay.
Sanctus & Benedictus
In performance, we will pause for a minute between the Sanctus and Benedictus.
The Agnus Dei is sung three times in a row. The first two times, the text “miserere nobis,” is used at the end; the third time, the text “dona nobis pacem,” is used.
ALMA REDEMPTORIS MATER
This will be faster than in the recording, below. For individual parts, search YouTube for “Alma Redemptoris Mater Palestrina Soprano,” etc.
O MAGNUM MYSTERIUM
This will be faster than in the sung recording. Our tempo will be closer to the tempo in the recordings of parts, below.
